Covid-19: Damaging Economies yet Helping World’s Environment

Without a doubt, Covid-19 wreaked havoc in different countries worldwide. This caused a worldwide health crisis and forced various economies to slow down. This is felt by different businesses like Ponfish that sell varied items from baby items to microwave ovens. On the other hand, the pandemic has impacted the environment too in somewhat an intriguing and interesting way.

As Covid-19 runs across numerous parts of the globe, it spreads farther than closed borders and leading to the implementation of social distancing protocols.

How Long can we Maintain this?

Whether you believe it or not, Covid-19 affected millions of lives and the environment alike. Though, human mobility and emissions of carbon dioxide have been reduced, improving the quality of air and have encouraged wild animals to explore and come out of their homes. The question is, how sustainable this effect can be in the long run?

According to scientists, they’ve confirmed that the air quality in some regions improved after a few weeks. As aviation, industries as well as other modes of transportation come to a halt, air pollution severely reduced in countries by the virus similar to Spain, Italy and of course, China. The reduction in commuting brought by work from home policies played a big part in the reduction of carbon emissions.

Impact of Covid-19 to a Country’s GDP

As per Steven Davis, the Associate Professor in the Department of Earth System Science at University of California, it showed that there are generated approximately 500 tons of carbon dioxide per a million dollar of world’s GDP.

In fact just in 2019, there are already 40 billion tons of carbon dioxides that were emitted per 88 billion of world’s GDP. In the event that this correlation continues, the decrease of world’s gross domestic product because of imminent economic recession may result to a reduction in world’s emission of carbon dioxide in the same proportion.

Sooner or later, the outbreak of Covid-19 can offer opportunities and lessons that can result to environmental action. For example, we’ll have new baseline of what is achievable digitally from shopping, remote work, education and a whole lot more. The way we respond to this health crisis can shape how we’ll be dealing with climate crisis in the following decades. Brought by the outbreak, some habits that are incidentally advantageous to the environment might last for people will experience scarcity.

Ideas for environmental projects in clubs, schools and kindergartens

Many children spend time in kindergarten or at a very early age and then soon afterward in school and in clubs. Daycare centers and kindergartens in particular offer children the opportunity to get in touch with the environment and the topic of environmental protection at an early stage. It is important to involve the children and parents in planned projects at an early stage.

Tips on how environmental protection can be integrated

Collecting garbage

In one week, collect all the garbage in your facility. Talk to the children about why this garbage was generated and look for solutions together on how it could be reduced. At school, for example, by having students take reusable lunch boxes with them instead of plastic bags.

Book selection

There are now a lot of good books on the subject of environmental protection and sustainability, also for children. Organize a few of these for your facility. Children learn so much from books.

Project week

Organize a project week in your facility. Bring interested colleagues or parents with you and plan projects related to environmental protection. Maybe you plan the week directly with the children. Some children may already bring ideas on the subject with them from home.

Be creative

Together with the children, make oilcloths for storing food, maybe even as a present for the parents. Sew cotton bags with them. Playdough, watercolors, and salt dough are things that you can make with the children in kindergarten with just a few ingredients. Many products bought, especially modeling clay, often contain harmful substances and are lavishly packaged. Talk to the children directly about why you are making things yourself.

Upcycling

Together with the children, think about why things that actually end up in the trash could still be used. For example, fabrics can be colored with fruit and vegetable bowls. Toilet paper rolls can be used for handicrafts. Always take some time to explain to the children why it is so important to continue using things that have been produced.

Excursions

If you have the opportunity, use your travel backpack and take the children on excursions, depending on their age – for example in the forest, to a recycling plant, or to a farm. On farms, the children learn where milk and meat come from.

Biodegradable Cigarettes Could Start The Eco-Friendly Future Of The Tobacco Industry

Cigarette Butt

It ends up the planet’s obsession with vinyl is far from over. Smoke filters — although yes, we are conscious of the worldwide sheeting crusade that in itself sounds a bit drunk? SURELY they transformed the planet’s largest type of clutter into something biodegradable ages past? Nope, they did not. And we are just as shocked as you are.

You see, smoke filters that are ordinary break-down into parts of micro-plastic when subjected. It is a much larger issue because of our oceans compared to straws.

Would you think of this? From Wikipedia:

Cigarette butts are the most usual kind of anthropogenic (artificial) clutter on the planet, as roughly 5.6 billion cigarettes have been consumed annually globally. Of these, it’s estimated that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts become mess each year. The cellulose acetate fibers utilized as the filter material that was overriding don’t readily biodegrade due to the groups. A standard lifetime of a lost filter is regarded as around 15 decades.

I feel sick.

Fortunately, a business in South Africa is occupied starting a cigarette (and packing) that is 100% biodegradable.

The creators, Adam van Wyngaarden and Davide Scott, began Smokey Treats (sounds interesting!), using their flagship product being’Woodland Craft Cigarettes’.

Apart from being 100% organic and having zero additives, Woodlands has been having filters that are biodegradable made out of the sponge. They’ll be dissolved — obviously — in around three weeks.

What makes this so unique? It. The filter is not made from plastic, but instead. The tobacco doesn’t include 600 sweeteners, it is only flavorful — American tobacco that is African. The smoke paper is not bleached with chlorine, but maybe perhaps maybe even just a tiny bit — and it made from wood pulp. The packaging hasn’t yet been laminated in plastic and coated by inks and metal. This leaves our Smokey Treats the option for the 21st-century shop.

I flew into Adam and Davide and was able for the next stats:

  • Woodlands craft smokes launched a couple of days before Christmas 2018. Ever since that time they have grown to provide over 225 shops in the Western Cape — also have only launched within their very first Johannesburg shop (Wesley’s Tobacconist at Rosebank Theater)
  • There has been a fantastic response from outside music festivals (they had been the sole cigarette sale over 15 of all SA’s most significant festivals this year ). It sounds festival organizers just like not needing to clean up a huge number of filters off the floor at its conclusion.
  • Sold over 30,000 packs (hence replaced 600,000 vinyl filters using wooden ones).
  • Smokey Treats is devoting 1 percent of net-profits towards planting trees along with food gardens in suburban communities across South Africa
  • SA’s first cannabis (hemp for today ) cigarette is from the pipeline.

I am not certain what to say. We are not huge fans of smoking. Without causing damage to the environment you should do it. If you are likely to smoke, then at least do it right. You can find some alternatives such as the Siberia snus for the brave, a smokeless form of tobacco that is also getting more and more popular. It is still possible to find out, although their site is business only. Since that is really a no-brainer — large tobacco requires a note and has their home in order. Nicely done, man.

Mitigating the Detrimental Effects of Climate Change on Horse Health

Horse owners are voicing concerns that the detrimental effects of climate change forewarned years ago by scientists are now taking their toll on horse health.

Despite the care and attention being given by horse owners, the increasing severity of the effects of climate change still affect the health and well being of their horses. The reality however, is that the trend is likely to continue with greater severity, as the COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions that could make caring for the animals even more difficult for horse owners and breeders.

Nonetheless, veterinarians and horse health experts are giving advice on steps that can be taken to mitigate the effects of paramount weather disturbances.

Keeping Horses Stress-Free as Much as Possible

Inasmuch as climate changes can disrupt the training and work routine of horses, consider implementing structural changes that will allow them to carry on with the exercise they need even during severe weather. As much as possible, make certain not to leave the horses without human care and attention during severe weather conditions. Closely monitoring vital signs as indicators of how the horses are reacting to stressful conditions will enable hostlers to take immediate actions.

During extremely warm summers in which cooler conditions are quite impossible to maintain, help the horses adjust by providing more shady areas and constant supply of fresh clean water. Regularly trimming their coat and mane can help keep horses comfortable as days get warmer toward the peak of summer seasons .

Winters are now more severe, bringing on freezing temperature in open horse stables. Make sure the animals are properly sheltered and protected against winter elements, such as using as many horse blankets as necessary. Yet as much as possible, provide your horses with insulated and draft-free barns that could reduce the harshness of extreme cold temperatures. Supplement their diets with additional calories that can help horses maintain levels of body heat. Keeping the animals in robust conditions can help them go through the coldest periods of the winter season.

When located in areas where floods can reach high levels as a result of continuously occurring heavy rains, having an elevated section in which to temporarily shelter horses will help keep them in good condition. That way, in case flooding reaches the corrals, the horses will have access to drier areas instead of letting them endure flooded and muddy conditions, which could potentially lead to foot and hoof diseases.

On the other hand, some geographical locations tend to experience drought instead of flooding, which can be just as problematic as any climate condition. Horses suffer from dehydration as a result of an over-dry climate in which water shortages can occur. Also, lush green fields can turn into dry and arid wastelands that produce too much dust. Mitigate these effects by ensuring a water system that can provide adequate water supply, as well as keep the turf in which horses roam and graze as drought-resistant as possible.

Additional Recommendations from Past the Wire News Website

In closing, horse racing news provider “Past the Wire” also warns of stagnant and murky waters where biting insects breed and become carriers of infectious diseases. Moreover, as transmissions of viral infections initially occur in animals, make sure that horses are properly protected by way of vaccinations. In addition, through the news website’s article “The BloodHorse — From Print to Digital Masterpiece,” owners and breeders of blood horses can derive important information that can provide answers to other concerns about horse health.
